5 out of 5 stars Must have item! Great product!   January 4, 2009

This is a great product! Simple and efficient. 2 or 3 pieces of newspaper and totally elimate lighter fluid. Easier and faster.

5 out of 5 stars No more lighter fluid!!   December 16, 2008

This is an amazing piece of equipment that every grilling Joe needs. The coals come out red hot and there is no more reapplying lighter fluid after the first round of flames dies out. It will save you time, money and you will have a better quality of food at the end of the day.

Since this item was a birthday gift I am unable to submit a review. I have rated it only one star for this reason.

5 out of 5 stars Purchased as a gift   December 10, 2008

First off, I can't speak to how well the starter actually works, since I'm giving it as a Christmas present this year. What I can speak to is how it compares to other chimney starters I've seen around as far as construction and design goes. Once my brother-in-law gets a chance to use it, I'll update the review.

This chimney starter is big. I've seen a number of other no-name starters in hardware stores and even grocery stores in the summer months and they look like they're about half the size of this thing. It's a lot bigger than it looks on the website, that's for sure. It's also heavy compared to the other starters I've seen. The walls are thicker, and it has a really nice wire cone in the bottom to hold the coals inside. Most other chimney starters have a flat piece of sheet metal with holes punched in it. It seems to me that smaller pieces of charcoal (especially if you're using lump charcoal instead of briquettes) would fall through those holes. The cone-shaped wire grate at the bottom of this one has much smaller spaces, which will keep your charcoal in the starter without sacrificing any airflow.

The other nice thing with this starter is the handle. It's a dense plastic which I'll have to see in use to really review, but the shape is much nicer than the standard wooden dowel. Like I've said, I haven't used it, but you can just tell by holding it that you get a better grip on it than you can on the round wooden handles on the average chimney starter. I also like the wire 'assist' handle. I messed with it a little and it is definitely a good addition. The only thing I can think of that would be helpful would be a wooden handle on that piece, maybe. It just seems like it might get hot with a bunch of burning coals that close to it.

That's pretty much it for now. Really, if you're at all in the market for a chimney starter, this is the one to get. You know how you can just hold something and feel the quality of it? This thing radiates quality, and I expect that it will last an exceptionally long time. With it costing what, $10 more than the cheap ones? There's really no comparison in capacity, design or construction.
